2011-2012 Season

We are proud to finally unveil our 11th  Season with 5 of what should prove to be unforgettable performances!  It is a tough decision narrowing down operas for the season when there are centuries of wonderful ones  from which to choose. We went through endless possibilities, but we think have come up with a season that provides something for every opera lover!

So....drumroll please....We kick off 2012 with Verdi's infamous tragedy/farce

Il Trovatore on February 4th
The Anvil Chorus: one of the most recognizable opera choruses ...ever.

and then we do a 180 degree turn from the war torn 15th Century Spanish Kingdom of Aragon to to the frivolity of 19th Century Vienna in

Die Fledermaus on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2012.

From there we continue the laughter with two nights of classic bel canto comedy in Donizetti's

Don Pasquale on April 21st and 22nd.

and on to the haunting balletic masterpiece based on works by Heinrich Heine and Gautier: Adolph Adams'

Giselle on May 22nd, 2012

and finally ending the Season with the beloved annual event featuring glorious music under the stars

Opera on the Lake on May 19th, 2012

There it is! And don't worry, we'll be filling you in on more information about the season and the singers!

WGO Pumpkin Carving Contest!

Celebrate the fall season AND the WGO season with an opera-o-lantern!

Instead of just carving a regular jack-o-lantern this year… carve a clever opera-themed pumpkin, take a picture and post it on the WGO Facebook (or email it to admin@wichitagrandopera.org and we will post it) for a chance to see one of the most popular operas of all time and....(drumroll) its our treat! (no tricks here)

The carver of the most amazing (and we’re sure they will be amazing) pumpkin will win two tickets to the kick-off production of the WGO 10th Anniversary Season; Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" on January 8th in the Century II Concert Hall with Korean soprano Yunah Lee and Russian superstar tenor Aleksey Sayapin singing the lead roles.

Feel free to be as creative as you want with your pumpkin tribute to opera!  We'd recommend using the 2010-2011 WGO Season for inspiration (as it is undoubtedly inspirational...again, check out the lineup here) but any opera theme will do! Humor us as we humbly offer some suggestions to get the ball rolling:

Disney Snow Queen or crazed Scottish royal, Lucia?

Puccini Pumpkin?

and last, but not least...our favorite:
the one and only Pavarotti Pumpkin!

Happy Carving!

Welcome to the brand new WGO Blog!

It is an exciting time for us here at the Wichita Grand Opera!  We're celebrating our 10th year with a fabulous season (check out the line up here), looking forward to both a brand new shiny website as well as renovated concert hall in Century II.  Not to mention the fact that we're starting this blog so you WGO fans can stay involved even when not at the theater!  Be sure to check back frequently as we plan on supplying interesting articles, providing back stage access to WGO productions, and periodically holding contests for tickets and even a walk-on role of a WGO Opera!
